Outsourcing: Help for your Final Year Project
Or any other project. Let’s face it, not everyone’s hard at work doing all the work on their own projects. These days, with the internet, sourcing for help is getting easier and faster. Students, learn your options. Lecturers, take note.

Other than your usual help from parents, boyfriend, or uncle who happens to have the same degree as the one you’re taking now, here are two sites fairly commonly used (indiscreetly) to outsource project work.

Let’s take a quick tour of getafreelancer. Getacoder offers similar services, but is more aimed at programming. Useful for those working on such projects.

Getafreelancer

Getafreelancer features various types of project work. Let us assume we’re working on a flash project, but have no time/too lazy/too lousy to do it. Or we want to get a distinction.

On the front page of getafreelancer there is a list:

This is the page where you’ll be posting your project to ask for bids. It works like a reverse ebay. You describe your project, and people will bid as low as they feel it is worth to them to do the work. Projects range from the really simple, the slightly more complicated, and the huge (FYP?) projects. Prices range accordingly.

If we’re doing a small project, it may be similar to the 34 second long flash animation for TV. Let’s take a closer look at that project.

Ok now we have a better description of the project, and we see that arlee04 has bid on the project. You will find that some people have no reviews, and some have hundreds and thousands of reviews. Those are the longtime freelancers and will be more likely to ask for a higher price. But if you want top class work, it might be worthwhile investing in them.

Of course, as an employer, you have ratings too. Based on how much information you provide for the project, how it is working for you, and so forth.

There are all sorts of employers and all sorts of projects, big and small.

So students, if you ever find yourself stuck on a project, there are ways to get help.

And lecturers, I’m sure you’re aware of such going-ons, and have made post-project interviews to catch cheaters.

Lasik in Singapore
Having done Lasik surgery at Shinagawa before, here's sharing the answers to some common questions.

1. Do I need to prepare anything before going for my first consultation?
Best to not wear any contact lenses for 1-2 weeks before the consultation. They will need to measure your cornea's curvature, and wearing your contact lenses may cause some warping.

2. Will I have perfect vision?
It varies from person to person. You're likely to regain at least 95% or so of your eyesight. So it depends on how high your refractive error is to begin with.

3. Does Lasik fix astigmatism?
Yes, but also to a similar degree as above.

4. Are there any side effects?
Dry eyes, glares and halos are common. But most symptoms will fade within a few weeks and more so over time. It's important to take good care of the eyes especially during the healing phase.

5. How long is the surgery?
It's impressively only about 10-15 minutes. And you'll get to go home within an hour after.

6. How long is the recovery?
I had normal vision with no discomfort at all the very next day. Refrain from water sports for at least 2 weeks, and physical sports for about a month.

7. Where can I get Lasik done?
I highly recommend Shinagawa. The overall experience there is fantastic, with professional service provided all the way, in a gentle, guiding manner. I'd compare it to taking a flight on Singapore Airlines. Find them here: http://www.shinagawa.com.sg

Blackberry capabilities without BIS
This is based on my experience in Singapore. The facts will likely cover other countries as well, but I can't say for sure. Do your homework. A fairly common question that gets asked is what can be done on a Blackberry without a Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) plan. If you begin your search at crackberry.com, or other such forums, you'll tend to get discouraged. However, how much is truth, and how much is just people overprotective of their way of life?

Things you'll hear, and I can tell you are 100% not correct:
"Starhub/Singtel/xxx telco insists that Blackberrys can only be activated with the addition of a data plan."

or

"You can only buy a Blackberry with a BIS plan/Data plan."

Not true. Find another Customer Service Operator. You CAN buy a Blackberry without any such plans. The question is what do they mean by activated? I haven't a clue. But it definitely doesn't mean the phone won't work at all.

"A Blackberry without BIS/Data Plan is as good as a paperweight"

This gives the impression that the Blackberry is a special device that can only work if you sign up for it's special plan. Wrong. At the very least you can still make phone calls and send text messages. That's a pretty impressive paperweight. Paperweight.5 perhaps? iPaperweight?

"A Blackberry without BIS/Data Plan is a dumbphone"

Really depends on your definition of dumbphone. My dumbphones could never edit word, excel and powerpoint documents. iDumbphone?

"Why get a Blackberry if you don't want push email? You're buying the wrong phone. I can do the same things on my $50 PDA."

Why get a Tag Heuer when you don't do intensive activities? You're buying the wrong watch. I can tell the time on my $20 Casio.
Why get a Ferrari when you don't drive at 300km/hr? You're buying the wrong car. I can drive at the same speed on my Honda.
Why get a Gucci bag? I can carry the same things in my plastic bag.

Why indeed.

You'll find many people misleading you to think the following chart is true.

Which is blatantly wrong.

Note: I'm not keen on getting into any arguments about how someone should use their Blackberry. I believe that is totally up to each individual, and that people have good reasons for doing things the way they want to. This is a purely informative post.
